EMMYS: Q&A With Kaira Falchuk Of Glee

Kaira Falchuk had a significant summer time. While focusing on two shows at the same time because the co-creator of Glee and FXs forthcoming American Horror Story, he found himselfrecently arguing reviews of Glee stars Jum Michele,Chris Colfer, and Cory Monteith departing the series after Season 3.Despitethefan backlash andgripesonline about the standard of their sophomore season, Glee stillsnared adozen Primetime Emmy nominations, including for Outstanding Comedy Series.Falchuk spoke with Deadline TV Contributor Ray Richmond: DEADLINE: Gleehas been whackedhard on the web. What doyou think fueled the backlash? Kaira FALCHUK: I must say it just complements the territory. What I will tell you is the fact that we labored seven days aweek all season. We simply labored our asses off. And Im really happy with what wedid. I make no apologies for this. If you have 3 designers who're sodirectly associated with every story and each word as Ryan Murphy, IanBrennan, and that i were, that which you find yourself with onscreen will probably be differenteach year based on where we're artistically. Therefore it was what it really was, andwere all very happy with it. When you are on the top like i was fromthe start, youmake her an extremely large target. But when it comes to thestorytelling, the way the episodes performed out, the talent, the choreography, I makeno apologies for this. DEADLINE: Have you hang aroundchatrooms gauging the feedback in the fans and also the experts? FALCHUK: The only real feedback I just read was on Twitter, which felt mixed. I dont read blogs or visit chat rooms, because thats just requesting it. Im a large baseball fan, and that i likenthis to being involved with a ballgame. If Im a manager who won lots of gamesand I recieve lots of garbage for getting a pitcher whos won lots of games, andthen my reliever implodes, I recognize Im likely to hear lots of flak. But goinginto the chatroom reading through how awful I'm like a manager is not going that helped me to.It is the same in thissituation with my show.So Itry to prevent it. DEADLINE: Does some of that Twitter feedback assist you in in whatever way? FALCHUK: Well, weve never really used anything weve seen there to create a real story. Nevertheless its assisted us to determine directions for figures to use.In ways, none people ever leave our prime school mindset. And also at thesame time, exactly what occur in senior high school is exaggerated.Every romance is Romeoand Juliet. As well as the smallest shunning feels as though youve beenbooted on vacation. And So I think its thosefeelings we hit on which have resonated and felt in some way real to fans.In some way weve had the opportunity with Glee to chop the noise and touch people. Weve not just entertained people butmade a large effort to possess them feel something. DEADLINE: What exactly are youdoing in a different way in Season 3 tocut lower about the negative fanreaction? FALCHUK: Not necessarily that much, honestly. Its tough to think back and state that artistically we ought to make this choiceor that choice. You usually want additional time. Perhaps a couple of weeksextra in some places might have designed a difference. However I honestly think that theseason approaching will probably be good, for the reason that were determining how bestto do that show better constantly. But our mandate continues to be to become great withevery episode, and getting the incredibly gifted people around us that people dohas assisted a great deal. DEADLINE: Jane Lynch is hosting the Emmys. And Glee hasanother 12 nominations, including for OutstandingDrama Series. FALCHUK: Poor Jane. We provide the lady many more pages of monologues to understand with very little time. She is available in, nails it, is amusing, and not gripes. Shes a celebrity. Emmys really are a wonderful recognition. We dontexpect these items, so hopefully well never become complacent. Its a tributeto how hard everybody creates this show, including our crew who're soincredibly good with this makeup and costumes. DEADLINE: You now’re focusing on two hour-lengthy shows at the same time with American Horror Story. FALCHUK: Were writing both shows. I wasntsure what it might be enjoy having to change gears so significantly day afterday. But we also did Glee and Puppy nip/Tuck simultaneously for some time, too. What is interesting may be the change between Glee and HorrorStory is not that radical when it comes to negligence the mind we use. At theend during the day, its all just storytelling and making options.

'John Carter' Sequel: 'One At A Time,' Says Taylor Kitsch

The buzz continues to build around Andrew Stanton's live action debut, "John Carter," and thus far it's mostly positive. We haven't really seen enough of the film yet to deconstruct it properly, but after a well-received showing at D23 last weekend, and updates from the key players involved, it's safe to say that our expectations will remain decidedly high until its March 9, 2012 release date. When MTV News caught up with Stanton and star Taylor Kitsch, we asked what has been most satisfying about being involved in the project thus far. "For me personally it's been the process," Kitsch said. "Now we're kind of reaping the journey we went on to create it, and working with this guy everyday and challenging each other and working off these great actors." "I have to say, the biggest thrill for me, for as hard as it is, is the making of the movie," Stanton added. "You try to create a really fun family that loves the challenges of the day, that loves doing what they do," he explained of his cast and crew. "We really lucked out, we created a hell of a cast and crew and we miss each other, we're really hoping we could do it all again for another film." Speaking of their stellar cast, we asked what effect the great Willem Dafoe had on the project, particularly during the scenes in which he was acting and fighting on stilts, as a nine-foot-tall Martian. "What I find weird is that we got used to it so quickly," Stanton said. "It didn't look odd at all to be talking to somebody on stilts." "And he's a legend for a reason," added Kitsch. "He shows up to work and he's so great, just an incredibly giving actor. I know a lot of lesser actors who won't do off camera [work]." "Exactly. He set the tone for how hard to work," Stanton continued. "If he's on stilts in a 100-degree heat up on a hill doing this, then everybody else is going to raise their game." Back to the sequel talk, is there a limit to how many "John Carter" sequels they would do? "I don't know," Stanton said with sincerity. "We'll just hope there is one right now." "One at a time," Kitsch said with a smile. How many "John Carter" movies will we see? Tell us in the comments or on Twitter!

Special Flight (Vol special)

A Climage presentation of a Look Now! release of an RTS/Unite des Film Documentaires, SRG SSR, Arte Geie production. (International sales: Climage, Lausanne, Switzerland.) Produced by Fernand Melgar. Co-producers, Irene Challand, Gaspard Lamuniere, Alberto Chollet, Urs Fitze, Annie Bataillard, Christian Cools. Executive producers, Stephane Goel, Elise Shubs. Directed by Fernand Melgar.(French, German, English dialogue)A follow-up to his award-winning "The Fortress," "Special Flight" finds docu helmer Fernand Melgar again exploring issues surrounding undocumented immigrants in Switzerland. As in his previous pics, Melgar maintains a "pure" docu style with no voiceover, barely any explanatory titles and no investigation. As a collective portrait of a group of hapless men held in detention with deportation looming, "Special Flight" is an affecting work when viewed strictly on an emotional level, but thinking auds will want some questions answered. Still, the film is likely to take off for all points, including boutique arthouses. With its reputation for economic stability and neutrality, Switzerland remains a tempting haven for refugees from Africa and Eastern Europe. However, according to a Swiss law passed via referendum, those without documentation can be abruptly arrested, held without recourse to a lawyer for up to 24 months and summarily bundled onto a plane back to their country of origin. No warning is necessary, and there is no appeal. In special cases -- Melgar never explains how this happens -- some are released back into their Swiss lives, but most are deported via either regular flights or specially chartered planes on which they're treated like beasts. The helmer takes his camera to the Frambois detention center near Geneva, a purpose-built facility with surprisingly comfortable appurtenances, until it's recalled that these men -- approximately 25 at a given time -- are basically prisoners whose crime was staying in the country beyond their allotted time. Some of the "residents," as they're euphemistically called, have been in the country for more than a decade, raising kids, paying taxes and social security, yet lacking permanent resident status. During Melgar's filming, a law allowing maltreated pets to have legal representation was under debate, a biting irony not lost on the Frambois inmates. Indeed, despite the facility's generally sympathetic staff, the men in limbo are treated like children rather than adults; the docu attempts to give them their individuality and dignity, though Melgar's decision not to focus on anyone in particular means the men become causes more than individuals. Presumably there are separate facilities for women, though it's never stated. Similarly, it's not clear why certain inmates are put on regular flights back home, while others are literally tied up and immobilized for special flights, a form of mistreatment that, in addition to costing Swiss taxpayers a fortune, has had fatal consequences. In many cases the men are terrified of returning to homelands where repression and persecution are near certainties. Those familiar with Melgar's style will realize that an exploration of these issues will have to wait for another filmmaker, but nevertheless, the helmer is to be commended for subjecting an enormous problem to critical scrutiny. The docu's subjects get under the skin, and their plight represents one of the major challenges to immigration policy not just in Switzerland, but in the First World as a whole. Camera access was near total, and Melgar and his crew obviously won over not just the inmates but also the staff, who clearly want to help these men. Tech credits are strong.Camera (color, HD-to-35mm), Denis Jutzeler; editor, Karine Sudan; music, Wandifa Njie; sound (Dolby Digital), Christophe Giovannoni, Juerg Lempen, Gabriel Hafner, Francois Musy. The Lying Game: Who's Who and How Is It Different From the Books?

Alexandra Chando ABC Family's The Lying Game may be based on the book of the same name, but the similarities pretty much end there. "People who have loved the book will still get the tone in the series, but it takes on a life of its own," executive producer Charles Pratt, Jr. (Melrose Place) tells TVGuide.com. "Everybody you see on this show is somehow tied into the mystery, which is probably our biggest departure." In the book by Pretty Little Liars author Sara Shepard, Emma Becker learns she has a twin sister Sutton Mercer, but when she meets her, she finds out that she's dead, and the story's quest is Emma's search to find the killer. In the show's first episode, Sutton (Alexandra Chando, who also plays Emma) is very much alive, but departs shortly thereafter to locate the twins' birth parents, leaving Emma behind to cover up for her absence. Add The Lying Game to your Watchlist before the new season begins and never miss an episode Still, many of the characters will be familiar to fans of the book. Sutton's sister Laurel (Allie Gonino), best friends Char (Kristen Prout) and Mads (Alice Greczyn), nemesis Nisha (Sharon Pierre-Louis) and ally/romantic interest Ethan (Blair Redford) all make appearances. Andy Buckley and Helen Slater star as Mr. and Mrs. Mercer and Adrian Pasdar plays Mads' overbearing father Alec Ryback. Mads' runaway brother, Thayer, whose whereabouts are a big mystery in the book, will be portrayed by Christian Alexander. Pratt shares insight into why and how the show will veer far from the books, what new characters will be popping up and what the new meaning of "the lying game" will be. Why change the book:Pratt says he wanted Sutton and Emma to on-screen together, so the decision was made to keep Sutton alive, "at least for the time being," he teases. "Following [Sutton's] adventure is very relatable in our minds for kids who are adopted - that eventual day when they go off in search of their biological parents." Exclusive First Look: The Lying Game's mysterious promo revealed New faces:As seen in the clip below, it doesn't take long before Ethan figures out that his secret girlfriend Sutton has been replaced by her twin. Although Ethan and Emma become close (he's the only one aware of her secret), Pratt wanted to give him a male figure he could talk to, hence a brother. "Tyler Christopher plays Dan the cop ... and seems to be connected to our District Attorney [Pasdar] from way in the past." Pratt says the book was also lacking lots of hunky male characters necessary for a good teen soap. "Derek (Ben Elliott) is a laid back guy who's been in trouble with the law and gets involved in the story," Pratt says. "He becomes a love interest for Char, and she's in a very dangerous high-stakes love affair with a guy who shouldn't be falling in love with this rich girl, but he is." Laurel's sister also gets a b.f. "Randy Wayne plays Justin Miller, who comes in the third episode. You start to wonder about him because: Is he too good to be true? It's also very interesting to see him fit into the family and how it plays into sibling rivalry." Exclusive: Heroes' Adrian Pasdar to play papa in ABC Family's The Lying Game Forbidden love:What's a good drama without a student-teacher relationship? "Mads is going to have a major crush on her ballet instructor Eduardo [Rick Malambri]," Pratt explains. "Ultimately, Eduardo gets way involved in the big mystery without wanting to be, and he's in the wrong place at the wrong time with disastrous results." The parents won't be shoved to the wayside:Expect major screen time from the folks. "More and more, they are a part of the mystery," Pratt says. "All of them are involved, from puppetmasters to innocent victims being lied to and maybe an affair way in the past. You're not going to see flashbacks, but you'll see photographs of Helen Slater at the homecoming dance and Andy Buckley, Adrian Pasdar and others." A new meaning to the lying game:In the book, the "lying game" referred to a secret clique that Sutton and her friends created to pull pranks on their classmates, including those in the group. Emma soon wonders if one of the jokes led to Sutton's murder. In the series though, Pratt says the lying game takes a backseat. "It's brought up at different times, but as something they did in the past," he says. "The actual lying games don't really tie in [to the show] because they tied into the murder [in the book] that we're not doing. We kept the title ... because the switch that these two twins have done is one big lie and almost every relationship and every story is based on lies and truth issues." The Lying Game premieres Monday at 9/8c on ABC Family. Watch a clip from the premiere below:
